The 21st International Conference on Fluid Dynamics (ICFD) was held from 18th to 20th of November 2024 in Sendai's 国際センター (International Center), and this article is a short attendance report by me, Mohamad Faridafshin.

The conference started on the morning of November 18th (Monday) by plenary talks given by two renowned professors from Imperial College London and Cambridge University. It was fascinating for me to see these people in person and listen to how they explain such complicated topics in a simple and smart way.

My presentation was titled “Numerical Simulation Analysis of the Heat Transfer Performance of Screw Pipe of the Water-Cooled Divertor in a Nuclear Fusion Reactor” that was a continual to the research firstly presented at ISEM2023 and published as a journal paper in 2024. This topic was special for me because 1) it only contained numerical simulation, unlike the previous topics that just consisted of experiments, and 2) I was new to this topic so had to learn so many things at a short time.

As I was the only member of our lab that was attending this conference so there is no picture with me in it, but I took short walks around the venue and enjoyed seeing the colorful autumn leaves.

ICFD is one of the largest conferences fluid science in the world, and this year's event - ICFD2024 - was the second largest event in the history of this conference, with 752 participants. ICFD2024 was the third - and the last - conference I attended as a PhD student, and the largest academic event I had ever seen. I listened to several talks that were given from the management viewpoint and made me look at things from a higher viewpoint and expand my horizons. As someone who is determined to become an academician, I believe having such experiences are crucial.
