Hello, this is Axel and I would like to talk about my experiences of some of the Japanese festivals I have discovered during spring 2026.
こんにちは、アクセルです。今回は、2026年の春に私が体験した日本のお祭りについて紹介したいと思います。
Sake festival / 日本酒まつり
The first one is the sake festival, which took place in Sendai at Nishi Kōen. With Seki-san and Iwanaga-san, we could enjoy 10 different sake from the Tōhoku region. That was quite a lot, but it allowed me to discover several types of sake. My favourites were a pink sweet one, another one based on oolong tea, and a "muddy" one (called that way because it still has rice in it). As it can be seen on the picture, it was hard not to spill them. It was a festival better and bigger than I expected !
最初に紹介するのは、仙台市の西公園で開催された日本酒まつりです。関さんと岩永さんと一緒に、10種類もの日本酒を楽しみました。かなりの量でしたが、そのおかげでさまざまな種類の日本酒を知ることができました。特に気に入ったのは、ピンク色の甘口の日本酒、ウーロン茶を使った日本酒、そして「どぶろく」です（米がまだ残っていることから、そのように呼ばれています）。写真からも分かるように、お酒をこぼさずに飲むのはなかなか大変でした。想像していた以上に大規模で、とても素晴らしいお祭りでした。
Thai festival / タイフェスティバル
Thanks to Professor Yusa's sharing about this festival, I have discovered several aspects of the Thai culture : traditional dances (that cannot be seen for free in Thailand apparently), Muay thai and sepak takraw. I could also enjoy spicy thai food thanks to the Yusa lab's training.
遊佐先生にこのイベントを紹介していただいたおかげで、タイの文化に触れることができました。タイの伝統舞踊（現地では無料ではなかなか見られないそうです）、ムエタイ、そしてセパタクローなどを楽しみました。また、遊佐研究室で鍛えられた（？）おかげで、本格的な辛いタイ料理もおいしく味わうことができました。
Sōma Nōmaoi / 相馬野馬追
I initially wanted to go there with Honjo-san, but because of a strong fever he could not come. That is unfortunate because this was such an impressive festival ! It took place at Minamisōma and featured : armored samurai riding horses while carying their flags, charismatic self-presentation, running with a mikoshi towards the top of a hill, and capture the flag launched like a firework.
本條さんと一緒に行く予定でしたが、彼が高熱を出してしまい、残念ながら来ることができませんでした。それでも、このお祭りは本当に圧巻でした。南相馬市で開催され、鎧をまとった武者が旗を掲げて馬で駆け抜けたり、力強い名乗りを披露したり、神輿を担いで丘を駆け上がったり、花火のように打ち上げられた御神旗を奪い合ったりと、迫力ある催しが続きました。
Kizuna festival / みちのく鹿踊大会
Direction Morioka where the Kizuna festival was held for this year 2026. With other COLABS members, we loved seeing the 6 major summer festivals of the Tōhoku region all in one place. Its name comes from the urge to face together the consequences of the Great East Japan erthquake (2011), after which it was created. I especially liked the Yamagata Hanagasa odori because it impressed me how they have found many many ways to dance with only one single hat.
2026年は盛岡市で開催された東北絆まつりにも行きました。COLABSのメンバーと一緒に、東北六大夏祭りを一度に見ることができ、とても感動しました。「絆」という名前は、2011年の東日本大震災の後、被災地が力を合わせて復興に取り組むという思いから名付けられたそうです。特に印象に残ったのは山形花笠まつりで、一つの笠だけを使って本当にさまざまな踊り方を表現していたことに驚きました。
Michinoku Deer Dance Festival / みちのく鹿踊大会
Held in Kurihara city, this festival is one of the most memorable with each shishi odori that lasted more than 30 minutes in the middle of an iris garden. Each dance group had their own style, making it interesting to watch. With this length, dances could also have stories such as a love story in a deer group.
栗原市で開催されたこの大会も、とても印象に残っています。菖蒲園の中で、それぞれ30分以上にわたって鹿踊が披露されました。各団体ごとに踊りの特徴や表現が異なっており、最後まで飽きることなく楽しめました。また、踊りが長いため、鹿たちの恋物語のような物語性を持った演目もあり、とても興味深かったです。
Aoba matsuri / 青葉まつり
Finally, coming back to Sendai with its famous Aoba festival. The first day, I could immerse myself in the atmosphere and see different Sparrow dance groups. This helped me to enjoy better my second day during which, thanks to Tohoku University, I participated to the main parade by pulling a Yamaboko ! That was a great experience to feel a bit more part of the japanese society.
最後は、仙台を代表する青葉まつりです。初日は会場の雰囲気を楽しみながら、さまざまなすずめ踊りの団体を見学しました。そのおかげで、2日目はさらに深くお祭りを楽しむことができました。そして、東北大学のおかげで、山鉾を曳いてメインパレードに参加するという貴重な機会をいただきました。日本の社会の一員になれたような気持ちになり、とても思い出深い体験でした。
Conclusion / おわりに
Seeing all these festivals during weekends was always very refreshing and helped focusing on research when coming back to work. All these different festivals are truly impressive. That is why to anyone reading this post, I recommend you to discover this unique culture of Japan.
週末にこれらのお祭りを訪れることは、とても良い気分転換になり、研究に戻ったときにはより集中して取り組むことができました。それぞれのお祭りには独自の魅力があり、日本の祭り文化の奥深さを実感しました。この文章を読んでくださった皆さんにも、ぜひ日本ならではの素晴らしい祭り文化を体験していただきたいと思います。
