President of NYCU and Delegation Visit Tohoku University

From March 18 to 19, 2026, a delegation from Taiwan’s National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), including President Chi-Hung Lin, Senior Vice President Yuan-Chen Jack Sun, and Vice President (International Affairs) Hsiao-Wen Zan, paid a visit to Tohoku University.

On the morning of March 18, in addition to renewing their university-level academic exchange agreement, the two universities signed a Letter of Intent confirming their intention to further consider the Joint Campus Concept aimed at fostering the next generation of highly-skilled human resources. President Teiji Tominaga, Executive Vice President (General Affairs, International Relations, and Academic Resources) Toshiya Ueki, Vice President (Education Reform and Global Engagement) Masahiro Yamaguchi, and Prof. Takahiro Hanyu of the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) represented Tohoku University at the signing ceremony.

President Tominaga and President Lin praised the signing as a reflection of the close partnership that the two universities have built over the years. They also agreed to use this opportunity to deepen joint research in such fields as semiconductors, disaster science, and dentistry, and to further accelerate the creation of innovative results in industry-university collaboration.

On March 19, the ‘Japan-Taiwan Semiconductor Co-Creation Conference’ was held at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR). The conference was attended by approximately 30 participants, including researchers from both universities as well as Japanese and Taiwanese industry professionals, with presentations on the latest research findings and lively discussions about implementing future joint projects.

In his opening remarks President Lin underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation and industry-university partnerships in semiconductor research and manufacturing, as well as strengthening relationships through fostering a talented workforce. In response, Vice President Yamaguchi spoke about the prospects for creating global research innovation by combining the strengths of both universities and accelerating ‘industry-education collaboration’ given their vision of the Joint Campus Concept.

As a result of this visit, the two universities’ collaborative relationship in cutting-edge technologies such as semiconductors is expected to develop in interdisciplinary directions, and exchange and collaboration are expected to deepen further.
