The ‘UPWARDS 2025 Tokyo Electron Summer Camp for WOMEN in collaboration with Tohoku Univ.’, hosted by Tokyo Electron in collaboration with Tohoku University, opened on August 7, 2025. The program was held as part of a summer camp for female science students from the 11 Japanese and American universities participating in ‘UPWARDS for the Future’*, a Japan-US university partnership. There were 32 participants, of whom 20 were students from UPWARDS member schools in Japan, three were students from the US, and nine were Tokyo Electron staff members.

At a lunch and networking event, participants discussed the future of student support and the differences in support systems. They were supported by Tohoku University students and faculty from the Tohoku University Center for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)**, the university’s Association of Leading Women Researchers in Engineering (ALicE)***, and the School of Engineering DEI Promotion Project****. Aside from the provision of support in general, such as the improving of scholarship programs and expansion of on-campus dormitories, the participants focused specifically on support for female researchers and students. They conferred on issues and solutions from a variety of perspectives, and their discussions centered on providing opportunities for female researchers to interact with each other, clarifying the provision of consultations, linking with female engineers, childcare support, and the need for role models and mentoring systems both on and off campus.

In the afternoon, the participants visited CIES and μSIC where they gained a greater understanding of how technology is progressing.

*UPWARDS for the Future is a network of partners made up of Micron, the American National Science Foundation (NSF), Tokyo Electron, and 11 universities from the United States and Japan, including Tohoku University. The partners are collaborating on advanced semiconductor education, on providing learning opportunities for students, and on promoting new research activities.
