Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki attended the 3rd Japan-India Universities Forum held in New Delhi, India, on October 19. This year’s event marked the third iteration of the forum, which has been organized by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) since 2023. A total of 34 academic institutions from India, along with 28 academic and research institutions and businesses from Japan, took part in this event’s discussions.

The forum was divided into three sessions. The opening remarks for the first session were delivered by Dr. Kazuhito Hashimoto, President of JST. These were followed by addresses from H.E. Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to Japan; Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science & Technology (DST); Mr. Hiroki Takaya, Deputy Director-General of the Science and Technology Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT); and Mr. Takashi Ariyoshi, Chargé d’affaires ad interim of Japan to India.

The second session focused on ‘promoting Japan-India brain circulation and encouraging their human resources to play an active role in the region’. Participants were divided into three roundtable groups to discuss strategies for enhancing study abroad exchanges. EVP Ueki’s group began by reviewing the initiatives implemented at each of their respective universities. The discussion then shifted to a productive exchange of ideas that focused on strategies to promote degree-earning study abroad programs and expand opportunities for female students.

The third session featured one-on-one meetings between participants from Japanese and Indian universities. During this session, EVP Ueki engaged in discussions with representatives from five Indian universities, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and IIT Gandhinagar.

Throughout the forum, participants actively engaged in discussions on potential collaborations between Japanese and Indian universities right up to its conclusion, ending the event on a successful and positive note.
