Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki attended Going Global Conference 2023, which was held in Edinburgh, Scotland from November 20 to 22.
Since 2004, the Going Global Conference has been organized by the British Council and geared towards senior-level leaders in the field of international education. The event facilitates discussions related to the future of higher education and provides opportunities for educational leaders to network.
On the 22nd, EVP Ueki was a panelist in a session entitled “Can we build new models of collaborative science partnerships to deliver the SDGs?”
In his remarks, EVP Ueki spoke about Tohoku University’s ongoing contributions to the field of disaster science through its International Research Institute of Disaster Science since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that occurred in 2011.
He noted that with the particularly serious nature of natural disasters in the Pacific Rim region and the increasingly frequent occurrence of such disasters around the globe due to factors such as climate change, the entire world must work together to address these issues.
EVP Ueki then introduced RENKEI, the Japan-UK Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives. Tohoku University was a founding member when this consortium was established in 2012, and EVP Ueki currently serves as its co-chair.
He explained that RENKEI aims to bring together and actively participate in diverse sectors to contribute to society. For example, the SDG themes of Climate Change and Health are important themes prioritized in RENKEI’s activities. After emphasizing the importance of RENKEI and its activities, EVP Ueki also expressed the consortium’s goal to put greater focus on the education of young and early-career researchers.
Other panelists in the session included a representative from a research foundation in Brazil and two other universities in Hong Kong and Indonesia. They each introduced their organization’s initiatives and funding of research related to the SDGs. The engaging panel event came to close with a productive Q&A session.
