Call-out for the RENKEI Researcher Online Workshop “Expanding Japan-UK Research Collaborations in Climate Change”

RENKEI, the Japan-UK Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives, would like to invite researchers from all fields to participate in part two of the third RENKEI researcher workshop on the topic of climate change. The workshop will be held online on Monday 18 January, 9:00 – 11:30 UK time/ 18:00 – 20:30 Japan time. Programme

The first two RENKEI “climate change” workshops (held in Tokyo in 2018 and in Newcastle in 2019) facilitated greater mutual understanding between researchers at partner universities and led to active research collaborations. Part one of this online workshop, in December 2020, looked at some of the interesting climate change-related research currently being carried out by researchers at RENKEI institutions, as well as at the next steps in terms of transitioning towards influencing policy and practice.
Part two of the workshop will consist mainly of parallel working groups to discuss the potential for collaborative research on various topics within the six sub-themes of climate change identified by RENKEI:
• Low carbon societies and green infrastructure
• Future risks and adaptation in floods and water shortage
• Future risks and adaptation in food production and security
• Managing future risks and building resilience in urban areas
• Future risks and adaptation in ecosystems
• Future risks and adaptation in human health.
Owing to the COVID-19 situation and restrictions on international travel, this workshop will take place online, using ZOOM. In addition, video presentations by participants will be available for viewing and comments before the workshop. Please see the draft programme for more details. The first two RENKEI “climate change” workshops (held in Tokyo in 2018 and in Newcastle in 2019) facilitated greater mutual understanding between researchers at partner universities and led to active research collaborations. Background:
RENKEI (Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives) is a partnership of 6 Japan and 6 UK research intensive universities, with the British Council acting as its secretariat. The member universities aim at strengthening the knowledge exchange and research collaboration between Japan and the UK. RENKEI provides a unique opportunity to bring together researchers from leading universities in Japan and the UK to tackle key global challenges. RENKEI members have selected “climate change” and “health” as two priority areas for creating new joint research between members. These two themes were identified as key strategic areas of science and technology collaborations between Japan and the UK when the prime ministers of both countries met in September 2017.
