RENKEI, the Japan-UK Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives, would like to invite researchers from all fields to participate in the third RENKEI researcher workshop on the topic of climate change.
The workshop will be held online on Thursday 10 December, 9:00 – 11:30 UK time/18:00 – 20:30 Japan time.
Participants should have interest/expertise in at least one of the subthemes of climate change listed below. There is no participation fee.
The workshop will take place in English, but key documents will be translated into Japanese.

Workshop Purpose and Outcomes: The first two RENKEI “climate change” workshops (held in Tokyo in 2018 and in Newcastle in 2019) facilitated greater mutual understanding between researchers at partner universities and led to active research collaborations.
This workshop will focus on expanding these and developing new collaborations, as well as looking at the next steps in terms of transitioning towards influencing policy and practice. It will address three main outcomes:
· Sharing of climate research and expertise
· Comparison of the climate-related policies and targets that institutions are setting for themselves
· Identification of new joint projects and research
The workshop will focus on the six sub-themes of climate change identified by RENKEI:
· Low carbon societies and green infrastructure
· Future risks and adaptation in floods and water shortage
· Future risks and adaptation in food production and security
· Managing future risks and building resilience in urban areas
· Future risks and adaptation in ecosystems
· Future risks and adaptation in human health.
We will also address policy issues including Energy Access, Energy Transition, and Low vs. High Carbon Development Strategies.
Owing to the COVID-19 situation and restrictions on international travel, this workshop will take place in a somewhat different format from the previous workshops.
Two short workshops will be held online, with a gap of around a month in between to allow participants to work on proposals for joint research. In addition, video presentations by participants will be available for viewing and comments before the workshop.

RENKEI (Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives) is a partnership of 6 Japan and 6 UK research intensive universities, with the British Council acting as its secretariat.
The member universities aim at strengthening the knowledge exchange and research collaboration between Japan and the UK.
RENKEI provides a unique opportunity to bring together researchers from leading universities in Japan and the UK to tackle key global challenges. RENKEI members have selected “climate change” and “health” as two priority areas for creating new joint research between members.
These two themes were identified as key strategic areas of science and technology collaborations between Japan and the UK when the prime ministers of both countries met in September 2017.
