On July 29th 2015, President Susumu Satomi (Tohoku University) and President Barbara Snyder (Case Western Reserve University) concluded a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities. Consul General Kazuyuki Katayama (Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit) attended as a witness to the signing, and a congratulatory message from Minister Hakubun Shimomura (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) was read at the signing ceremony held at Cleveland.
Additionally, between 29th and 30th, a Data and Life Science Collaboration Symposium was held. Tohoku University researchers and students from the Graduate School of Information Sciences and Medicine, as well as the Institute for Materials Research and the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization participated, deepening our research exchanges.
Case Western Reserve University is located in Cleveland, Ohio, and was founded by merging Case Institute of Technology (founded in 1880) and Western Reserve University (founded in 1826) into an Engineering-focused general university in 1967. Case Western Reserve University has had particularly remarkable achievement in the fields of medicine and bioinformatics, and is known for having the use of Data Science as a requirement in most of its education fields, as well as for being on the leading edge of applying it to medicine in research. Case Western Reserve University prides itself on having sixteen Nobel laureates among its graduates, and plays an important role in U.S. education and cultural spheres.
Through this Memorandum, Tohoku University has taken a concrete step towards establishing the International Joint Graduate Program in the field of Data Science as part of their role in the Top Global University Project, and we have high expectations for the results of collaborative research and education.
