Tohoku University’s EVP at 2016 JANET Forum

The inaugural General Meeting of the JANET Forum was held recently in Germany at the Free University of Berlin.

JANET, which stands for the Japan Academic Network in Europe, was founded in November 2015 as a planning hub for research exchanges. It’s a network that aims to promote synergy among academic institutions in Japan, Germany and other European countries.

At this first meeting, representatives from 28 participating Japanese institutions, as well as their German counterparts including research groups DAAD, DFG and AvH, and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), heard introductions to research projects currently underway in Europe.

The forum also discussed the latest research and education trends in Japan and Germany, and expressed hopes for strengthened ties between the two countries.

In his speech, Tohoku University’s Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki gave a brief outline of the university. In addition, University of Bayreuth Professor Tomoo Katsura introduced a joint research and education programme between Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Science and UoB’s Bayerisches Geoinstitut – recently selected as a JSPS Japan-German Graduate Project and DFG’s International Research Training Program.
