From July 30 to 31, 2026, First Secretary and Trade Commissioner Hamza Fahamoé of the Embassy of Canada to Japan visited Tohoku University and met with Executive Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi and International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) Director Shunichi Koshimura.
During the meeting, both sides contributed to productive talks on key priority areas for the Canadian government (such as quantum-related fields, AI, and life sciences), strengthening academic and research collaboration between Tohoku University and the University of Alberta, and potential cooperation in startup support and industry-university collaboration. In addition, IRIDeS Director Koshimura introduced initiatives for the research, development, and real-world application of disaster prevention AI, which led to a meaningful discussion towards strengthening collaboration.
In the afternoon, Commissioner Fahamoé took in the atmosphere at Tohoku University’s Open Campus event where he visited booths on semiconductors and quantum-related fields and learned about students’ research.
On July 31, he toured the 3GeV synchrotron radiation facility NanoTerasu and visited the Micro System Integration Center (μSIC) clean room.
This visit served as an important opportunity for the First Secretary and Trade Commissioner of the Embassy of Canada to Japan to deepen their understanding of Tohoku University’s cutting-edge research, as well as for Tohoku University to further develop its cooperative relationship in research and education with Canada into something more substantial and concrete.
