On February 25, 2026, a delegation from the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) led by IITH Director Budaraju Srinivasa Murty visited Tohoku University. The delegation met with President Teiji Tominaga, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki (General Affairs, International Relations, and Academic Resources), and Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi (Education Reform and Global Engagement).
At the meeting, President Tominaga warmly welcomed Director Murty and expressed his hopes for future collaborations. VP Yamaguchi then introduced the university’s strengths in research areas such as materials science, spintronics, and disaster science, in addition to the next-generation synchrotron facility NanoTerasu and other world-class research infrastructure on campus. Director Murty then provided a detailed explanation of the dynamic education and research ecosystem IITH is developing in India.
Director Murty particularly emphasized the system IITH has built to support startups, including a flexible curriculum that encourages student entrepreneurship and a Technology Research Park where many companies have on-campus bases. This system, he explained, makes IITH a hub for industry–academia collaboration.
Thereafter, productive discussions were held regarding the advancement of cutting-edge technologies and their future social implementation. President Tominaga and others expressed their deep interest in the IITH’s rapid pace of social implementation and high level of research, exemplified by the autonomous vehicles already in operation at IITH with regular scheduled service as well as a project in development for an emergency drone capable of transporting up to 200kg which could transform emergency medical care.
This visit is expected to further strengthen collaborations between the two universities, with future developments building upon the synergy between IITH’s innovation-driven initiatives and Tohoku University’s research infrastructure.
