University of Victoria Delegation Visits Tohoku University

L-R: Dr. Trapero, VP Kalynchuk, EVP Sugimoto, EVP Ueki

On 17th February, 2026, Vice President Lisa Kalynchuk and Dr. Joaquin Trapero from the University of Victoria in Canada visited Tohoku University. They were received by Executive Vice-Presidents Toshiya Ueki and Asako Sugimoto.

The visit follows recent moves by the two universities to draw up an inter-institutional MOU, as well as a previous visit made in March 2025. During the meeting, discussions centered around potential areas for future collaboration including climate science, aging, and aerospace. Exchange is already underway in several areas.

Vice-President Kalynchuk and Dr. Trapero had arrived in Sendai the previous day, on which they paid visits to the Graduate School of Engineering and the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR). Following their discussion, they met with representatives from the Advanced Institute for Marine Ecosystem Change (AIMEC), then made further calls to the Smart Aging Research Center (SARC) and NanoTerasu. Hopes are now high for future collaboration.
