
On September 9, 2025, a delegation from Romania’s Polytechnic University of Timişoara (UPT), led by its rector, Florin Drăgan, visited Tohoku University and met with Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki and Vice President Fumihiko Imamura.
In their meeting, EVP Ueki first gave an overview of Tohoku University, highlighting the university’s focus on the field of disaster science as well as its new Center for Integrated Japanese Studies, which was established in 2023.
Thereafter, Rector Drăgan introduced UPT and spoke about its various initiatives, including work related to collaboration with industry, the integration of art and technology, as well as policies to nurture student creativity and promote active learning.
In their discussions, both parties recognized climate change and natural disasters as shared challenges. They agreed to explore possibilities for further collaborations in the disaster science field, in which the two institutions have ongoing exchanges, and new collaborations in fields such as Japanese studies.
During their stay, the UPT delegation visited Tohoku University’s Cyberscience Center, International Research Institute of Disaster Science, and Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems. They also toured the 3GeV synchrotron radiation facility, NanoTerasu, which is located on the new extension of Aobayama campus . The UPT delegation met with other university representatives, including Professor Kazuya Yoshida and Professor Toshinori Kuwahara from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Engineering.
