Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Vice President for Research and Dean of Engineering Visit Tohoku University

On March 13, 2025, UPWARDS partner Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Vice President for Research, Robert Hull, and its Dean of Engineering, Shekar Garde, visited Tohoku University and met with Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi, Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems Director Prof. Tetsuo Endoh, WISE Program for AI Electronics (AIE) Program Secretary General Specially Appointed Prof. Masami Akamine, and the Global Engagement Division’s Specially Appointed Prof. Yoichiro Tanaka.

During the meeting, participants introduced the various education and research initiatives of their respective institutions. They also discussed promoting inter-university collaboration in education and research in semiconductors, quantum fields, and materials science within the framework of UPWARDS.

In addition, the guests from Rensselaer visited the NanoTerasu, the Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems, and the Micro System Integration Center, deepening their understanding of areas for future collaboration through researcher exchange. Exchange between the two institutions is expected to develop further as a result of this visit.

*UPWARDS for the FUTURE is a network of partners made up of Micron, the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States, and Tokyo Electron, along with 11 universities from Japan and the U.S. including Tohoku University. These founding members are expected to invest more than $60 million USD towards collaboration in cutting-edge semiconductor education, the provision of student learning opportunities, and the promotion of new research activities.
