Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki attends the annual RENKEI Steering Committee Meeting

Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki attended the annual RENKEI (Japan-UK Research and Education Network Knowledge Economy Initiatives) Steering Committee Meeting at the Kudan Kaikan Terrace in Tokyo on November 29.

A total of 25 representatives from member universities and the British Council, which serves as RENKEI’s secretariat, participated in the meeting, where they discussed topics such as the network’s future activities.

The meeting was moderated by EVP Toshiya Ueki, who serves as the co-chair on the Japanese side, and Prof. Rob Sturman of the University of Leeds, who serves as the co-chair on the UK side. Many ideas and thoughts were exchanged regarding the main activities of RENKEI’s next phase, which will begin in the next fiscal year and focus on the promotion of exchanges between early-career researchers. A workshop on climate change, which will be held at Durham University, will also take place in the spring. It was agreed that significant financial support would be provided to ensure that early-career researchers may participate in RENKEI activities.

After the Steering Committee Meeting, a reception organized by the British Council was held to facilitate the promotion of exchanges between institutions of higher education in the UK and Japan. The event was attended by researchers and government officials from both the UK and Japan, including Mr. Akio Fujiwara, the Administrative Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Eight researchers from Tohoku University participated in the event, where they had the opportunity to network with a wide range of individuals.
