A delegation from the University of Southampton, led by its Associate Vice President (Interdisciplinary Research), Prof. John Holloway, visited Tohoku University on October 10 and 11. The visit was warmly welcomed as University of Southampton is a member of the RENKEI program, a bilaterial consortium of universities from Japan and the UK, in which Tohoku University also participates. Prof. Holloway and the delegation were cordially greeted and met with Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki.
In the meeting, EVP Ueki introduced some of the university’s comprehensive efforts to enhance internationalization, such as fostering collaborations with various facilities at overseas academic institutions and establishing extensive support systems for incoming international students and researchers.
Prof. Holloway then went over the University of Southampton’s initiatives to advance academic research, particularly through the establishment of a virtual research laboratory. This virtual setup removes the constraints of a physical location, and enables greater flexibility to conduct research, which ultimately becomes a driving force for innovation. Both parties exchanged views on strategies to further promote international student exchange at their respective universities.
In addition to the meeting, the delegation also visited the Startup Incubation Center, the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, the Tohoku University Hospital’s Open Bed Lab, and the Smart-Aging Research Center.
