EVP Ueki Attends 55th AEARU Board of Directors Meeting and 30th Annual General Meeting

On September 27, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki attended the 55th Board of Directors Meeting and the 30th Annual General Meeting of the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) held at the University of Macau.

EVP Ueki joined the Board of Directors Meeting in his capacity as a board member and took part in discussions about activities and policies for the coming year, as well as matters slated for discussion at the General Meeting held thereafter.

The General Meeting took place with representatives from 35 member universities. After opening remarks by the University of Macau’s rector, Prof. Yonghua Song, representatives discussed the post-pandemic revitalization of the AEARU network’s activities.

During both meetings, EVP Ueki proposed that AEARU co-host Tohoku University’s annual APRU Multi-Hazards Summer School in 2025. The plan, which would include recruiting students from AEARU member universities, was unanimously approved.

After the General Meeting, an academic workshop on the theme of ‘Research Collaboration in East Asian Universities’ was held, with presentations from The University of Macau, Tohoku University, Fudan University, and Yonsei University, respectively, about cases specific to their institutions.

EVP Ueki’s presentation included Tohoku University’s work in the field of disaster science, as well as an introduction to ‘CAMPUS Asia + in Dentistry’, a MEXT-funded research and student exchange program.

The workshop was followed by a campus tour which included viewing a smart city R&D laboratory and the library.

The next Annual Meeting is scheduled to be held at Tohoku University in fall 2025.
