As part of its Global Health Program, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) holds an annual case competition for students to pitch their solutions to global health issues in 10-minute video form.
This year, participating teams were asked to propose technology-based solutions to improve the management of care for patients with diabetes, a demographic which is on the rise worldwide. 108 submissions were received from 14 member economies in the Pacific Rim.
This August, a joint team including Tohoku University fifth-year medical students Chisako Kitayama and Sun Zhengkang and students from Mahidol University (Thailand) was selected as one of the competition’s Top 10.
The Tohoku University–Mahidol University team’s program would make effective use of five existing technologies: virtual doctor’s visits, chatbots, VR simulation, artificial intelligence, and e-learning, to provide regionally-appropriate patient care as well as educational content for medical professionals.
