Executive Vice President Hideo Harigae attends the 10th annual CWRU-Tohoku University Data Science Symposium

The 10th Annual CWRU-Tohoku University Data Science in Engineering and Life Sciences Symposium was held at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) on August 5 and 6, 2024. This research symposium has been held annually since the two universities signed an academic exchange agreement in 2015. To commemorate the tenth holding of the symposium, about 20 researchers from Tohoku University, including Executive Vice President Hideo Harigae and Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi, participated in the event along with some 40 participants from CWRU.

An opening reception was held on the evening of August 4, at which CWRU President Eric W. Kaler and EVP Harigae gave congratulatory speeches. Both expressed their hopes of a further deepening of the collaboration between the two universities, which has been developed through the university-level academic exchange agreement, and to increase the number of interdisciplinary research themes and to further develop existing collaborations.

Aside from the symposium, Tohoku University’s delegation also spent some time meeting with Dr. Hiroyuki Fujita, Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital’s Board of Trustees and the Honorary Consul of Japan in Cleveland, and with CWRU Vice Provost Daniel Lacks. The delegation was also given a tour of Cleveland Clinic, which works closely with CWRU, and they took the opportunity to discuss matters with relevant parties. The clinic is a non-profit multispecialty academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education, and it is recognized worldwide for its advanced initiatives and the high-quality care it provides. During their discussions, the delegation was given an introduction to the clinic’s concrete initiatives in education, research, and governance, and the possibility of collaboration with Tohoku University in areas such as innovation and industry-academia collaboration was discussed.

It is expected that academic research activities and the exchange of early career researchers between Tohoku University and the CWRU & Cleveland Clinic side will further deepen and develop in the future.
