University of Washington’s Professor Tomikazu Sasaki greets the workshop participants
The University of Washington-Tohoku University Academic Open Space (hereinafter ‘AOS’) carries out activities to promote academic, student, and faculty exchanges between the two universities.
On June 7, the University of Washington’s Professor Champak Chatterjee and Professor Daniel Chiu visited Tohoku University and presented at an AOS workshop focused on the theme of ‘Science and Engineering at the Interface of Chemistry and Biology’. Professor Chatterjee, who works in the Department of Chemistry, and Professor Chiu, who works in the Department of Bioengineering, were also joined by their UW colleague, Professor Tomikazu Sasaki, from the Department of Chemistry.
To kick off the workshop, Professor Sasaki, who serves as chair of the AOS, gave an overview of AOS activities. Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi then shared his opening remarks, in which he touched on the significance of the workshop in strengthening the universities’ collaborative relationship within the chemistry field and his gratitude to the speakers and gathered participants.
After VP Yamaguchi’s remarks, both professors and early-career researchers gave presentations. Professor Chiu presented on the topic of ‘New Technologies for the Isolation and Analysis of Liquid Biopsy Markers with High-Throughput and Unprecedented Sensitivity’, and Professor Chatterjee gave a lecture on ‘Clarifying the Complexity of Chromatin by Chemical Protein Synthesis’.
From Tohoku University, Professor Hitoshi Shiku from the Graduate School of Engineering and Professor Tomohisa Ogawa from the Graduate School of Agricultural Science shared their respective research. In addition, two early-career researchers from the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Associate Professor Shinichi Sato and Assistant Professor Hideaki Matsubayashi , as well as another early-career researcher from the Graduate School of Engineering, Associate Professor Kosuke Ino, introduced their work. Through the presentations and the Q&A sessions that followed each one, the workshop became a forum for meaningful discussions related to the field of chemistry.
It is hoped that this AOS event will serve as an opportunity that leads to the further deepening of collaborative activities between the two universities within the field of chemistry.
