On May 29, Mark Wuebbels, the Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General Sapporo visited Tohoku University and met with President Teiji Tominaga, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, and Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi.
President Tominaga began the meeting with remarks on the close cooperative relationship that Tohoku University has built with the United States. He touched on developments in Tohoku University’s collaborations with American universities in recent years, which have mainly focused on the semiconductor and quantum fields. President Tominaga also recognized the increasing importance of collaborations with academic institutions in the U.S. as Tohoku University continues to build and promote its international presence.
Consul General Wuebbels expressed his gratitude for Tohoku University’s cooperation at the G7 Science and Technology Ministers’ Meeting, which was held in Sendai in May 2023. He noted that Tohoku University and the U.S. have collaborated in a variety of fields to date and shared his hope that they would continue to advance dialogue around deepening their collaborative relationship in strategic fields, such as semiconductors and AI.
In their discussion, they also exchanged views on demographic changes related to declining birthrates and aging populations, as well as other issues faced by both the U.S. and Japan.
