KU Leuven delegation visits Tohoku University and signs university-level MOU

On April 22, a delegation from KU Leuven, led by its rector, Prof. Dr. Luc Sels, joined President Teiji Tominaga at Tohoku University for the signing ceremony of a new university-level memorandum of understanding (MOU) and student exchange agreement.

President Tominaga opened the meeting by welcoming the delegation and expressing his hope that the new MOU and student exchange agreement would lead to further joint research and exchanges between the two universities. Rector Sels then gave an overview of KU Leuven, highlighting its strength in the medical field and its Health Sciences Campus.

At the signing ceremony, President Tominaga and Rector Sels concluded the university-level MOU and student exchange agreement. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Eduard van Kleunen, the Deputy Head of Mission at the Belgian Embassy in Tokyo.

After the ceremony, the KU Leuven delegation visited the university’s Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization and its International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

KU Leuven has mainly worked with the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and Graduate School of Life Sciences through department-level agreements. Since Tohoku University established its Neuro Global International Joint Graduate Program in 2018 to develop talented researchers in the fields of life sciences and brain sciences, KU Leuven has also been a partner in the program’s global network. The conclusion of the new university-level MOU and student exchange agreement is expected to promote more university-wide exchanges, including those in the humanities and social sciences.
