On March 12, 2024, President Hideo Ohno visited Sapienza University of Rome with Tohoku University’s Vice President for Public Relations and Promotion of Diversity, Prof. Noriko Osumi, and the Associate Executive Vice President for International Affairs and Deputy Director of the Global Learning Center, Prof. Kazuko Suematsu.
Since concluding a university-level academic exchange agreement in 1990, Tohoku University and Sapienza University of Rome have engaged in exchanges mainly within the field of Japanese studies, in addition to other fields.
President Ohno and the delegation from Tohoku University met with Prof. Giuseppe Ciccarone, who serves as Vice Rector and the Deputy Rector for both international affairs and outreach. They were joined by six representatives from Sapienza University of Rome, including those at the university’s Italian Institute of Oriental Studies who have close ties with Tohoku University professors working within the field of Japanese Studies.
During their discussions, President Ohno touched on the two universities’ past collaborations through the Hasekura League, an international academic network for Japanese Studies, and shared his wish that this network would continue to expand and make a positive impact in the world.
Vice Rector Ciccarone expressed his hope that the new memorandum of understanding on student exchange, which was concluded by both universities last year, would lead to even more productive exchanges between the two universities.
The meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm the strong connection that has been grown between the two universities, and the representatives all agreed to further promote future research and student exchanges.
During President Ohno’s stay in Rome, he held an informal meeting with Tohoku University students who are participating in a special short-term study program on high-level global leadership skills. He also met with Tohoku University alumni living in Rome.
