A ceremony to confer an honorary doctorate on President Hideo Ohno and a joint workshop are held at the University of Warsaw

Tohoku University President Hideo Ohno was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Warsaw for the world-class research he has conducted in the fields of spintronics and semiconductors.

The ceremony was held on November 13, 2023 at the Kazimierzowski Palace on the University of Warsaw’s main campus. The award was made by Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, in the company of other esteemed academics. In line with etiquette, the ceremony was held in a formal atmosphere.

In his speech, President Ohno expressed his gratitude to Polish researchers, especially those at the University of Warsaw, with whom he has conducted joint research. He also thanked his family and the students who helped shape his career as a researcher, and he reflected on his research achievements to date.

President Ohno also mentioned that Tohoku University has been selected by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology as the only final candidate for accreditation as a ‘University for International Research Excellence’. He spoke about his desire to promote stronger international collaboration, including collaboration with the University of Warsaw, in order to contribute to solving global issues, and he also expressed his determination to use his knowledge and skills to contribute to the world and future generations.

In conjunction with the ceremony, a joint workshop for spintronics, Japanese studies, and international law was hosted by Tohoku University , the University of Warsaw and Polish Academy of Sciences on November 13 and 14. Tohoku University was represented by Prof. Shunsuke Fukami, Director of the Center for Science and Innovation in Spintronics; Prof. Toshiaki Kimura, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Letters; Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki; and Prof. Hidenori Tozawa, Dean of the Graduate School of Law. Over 30 researchers and students from both universities participated.

Thorough presentations on research and fruitful question-and-answer sessions were held, and it is expected that this workshop will help to expand research exchanges between the two universities in a number of fields.
