On June 5, 2023, a delegation from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), led by President Chi-Hung Lin, visited Tohoku University. President Lin and President Hideo Ohno signed an MOU to strengthen cooperation between the two universities.

In addition to the university presidents, the ceremony was attended by Tohoku University representatives EVP Motoko Kotani, EVP Toshiya Ueki, and VP Masahiro Yamaguchi, as well as Vice President Jenn-Hwan Tarng and Vice President Chien Chou from NYCU. With the conclusion of the MOU, the departmental liaison offices that had been established at each university will be integrated under university-wide liaison offices that aim to enhance collaboration between the two universities. An unveiling ceremony for the new liaison office plaques was also held.

The ceremony was followed by a meeting between President Ohno and President Lin and discussions amongst executives. The parties agreed to expand their cooperative efforts at the Joint Laboratory both in scope and form. They discussed, for example, broadening the range of research exchanges, previously focused on the fields of engineering, dentistry, and medicine, to also include the social sciences and humanities. They also agreed to enhance student exchanges, such as through internships in the field of semiconductors.

The delegation visited NanoTerasu, a 3GeV synchrotron radiation facility, the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, and Tohoku University Hospital. At the Joint Laboratory workshop, keynote speeches and research presentations on topics related to semiconductors, medical engineering, dentistry, and medicine were given. These were followed by a productive Q&A session.

The delegation’s visit is expected to lead to the further development of exchanges with NYCU.
