The MIRAI 2.0 Research & Innovation Week 2022 was held from November 15 to 18 on Kyushu University’s Ito Campus.
The proceedings opened with addresses by President Tatsuro Ishibashi of Kyushu University, which hosted the event; Norimi Mizutani, the Vice President of Nagoya University, which is currently one of the coordinating universities for MIRAI 2.0; and Eva Wiberg, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg. Congratulatory addresses from the science and technology ministries of both Japan and Sweden followed, and Professor Tetsuya Osaka of Waseda University then gave a keynote speech on a ‘Prospective View of Battery Energy Systems for Carbon Neutrality’.
R&I Week was attended by eleven researchers from Tohoku University, either in-person or online. Four faculty members who are members of the MIRAI 2.0 thematic expert groups participated: Professor Masaki Takada of the International Center for Synchrotron Radiation Innovation Smart, Professor Itaru Honma of the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Associate Professor Alyne Delaney of the Center for Northeast Asian Studies, and Assistant Professor Emi Yuda of the Center for Data-driven Science and Artificial Intelligence. MIRAI 2.0’s themes are Ageing, Materials Science, Sustainability, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and AI, and lectures, the presentations of research results, and workshops were held for each.
The program included a general assembly meeting, in which the presidents, directors, and vice presidents of member universities discussed the future direction of MIRAI. A university leadership summit was also held at which interdisciplinary research was discussed, and lively discussions took place.
On November 13, before the opening of R&I Week, a reception was hosted by the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo, to which representatives of Tohoku University and the MIRAI member universities, as well as government representatives, were invited.
The next MIRAI 2.0 R&I Week will be held in November 2023 at Umeå University in Sweden.
