ABSTRACT:
Celebrating over four decades of dedication to translating Chinese and Japanese Buddhist texts into English, Paul Swanson brings a wealth of experience to our upcoming event. Join us as he shares his insights into the “art” of translation and its challenges. Swanson will offer initial reflections on the creative process of translation. He will delve into the complexities of preparing two distinct translations of the same text – a fully annotated technical version for specialists, and a non-annotated straight translation for a broader audience. Swanson will also discuss the unique challenges associated with each type of translation. In addition, he will present specific examples from two pivotal works by the Tiantai patriarch Zhiyi (538-597) – the Mohe zhiguan 摩訶止観 and the Fahua xuanyi 法華玄義. These examples will showcase how Swanson has tackled various translation problems.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Paul L. Swanson is Professor Emeritus at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture. He was born and raised in Japan. He did his graduate studies at Sophia University, the University of Tokyo, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His dual areas of specialization are Japanese Religions (Shugendo) and Buddhist Studies (Tiantai/Tendai Buddhism). His publications include: Foundations of T’ien-t’ai Philosophy, Pruning the Bodhi Tree, Nanzan Guide to Japanese Religions, Clear Serenity, Quiet Insight: T’ien-t’ai Chih-i’s Mo-ho chih-kuan, and In Search of Clarity: Essays on Translation and Tiantai Buddhism. In 2019, his monumental translation of Zhiyi’s work was awarded the Toshihide Numata Book Prize for Buddhism.

ABSTRACT:
According to the Bible, Eve was the first to heed Satan’s advice to eat the forbidden fruit and thus responsible for all of humanity’s subsequent miseries. The notion of woman as the Devil’s accomplice is prominent throughout Christian history and has been used to legitimize the subordination of wives and daughters. In the nineteenth century, rebellious females performed counter-readings of this misogynist tradition. Lucifer was reconceptualized as a feminist liberator of womankind, and Eve became a heroine. In these reimaginings, Satan is an ally in the struggle against a tyrannical patriarchy supported by God the Father and his male priests. Per Faxneld’s talk will show how this ”Satanic feminism” was expressed in a wide variety of nineteenth-century literary texts, autobiographies, pamphlets, newspaper articles, paintings, sculptures, and even artifacts of consumer culture like jewelry. Spanning European and US culture, the presentation details how colorful figures like the suffragette Elizabeth Cady Stanton, gender-bending Theosophist H. P. Blavatsky, author Aino Kallas, actress Sarah Bernhardt, anti-clerical witch enthusiast Matilda Joslyn Gage, decadent marchioness Luisa Casati, and the Luciferian lesbian poetess Renée Vivien embraced these reimaginings. By exploring the connections between esotericism, literature, art and the political realm, new light will be shed on neglected aspects of the intellectual history of feminism, Satanism, and revisionary mythmaking. The talk is based on Faxneld’s award-winning book Satanic Feminism (Oxford University Press, 2017).
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Per Faxneld is associate professor in Study of Religions at Södertörn University, Sweden, and Visiting Associate Professor at the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University. He is currently conducting a three-year project funded by the Swedish Research Council on spiritual dimensions of Japanese martial arts as practiced in Sweden. Faxneld is the author of the award-winning monograph Satanic Feminism: Lucifer as the Liberator of Woman in Nineteenth-Century Culture (Oxford University Press, 2017) and several other books and numerous articles. Specializing in esotericism and alternative spirituality, he is especially interested in issues pertaining to secularity, gender, aesthetics, and cultural transfers. Other research interests include folk religion and the intersection of religion and cinema.

ABSTRACT:
While never numerically significant, Satanism is intricately intertwined with broader issues central to the study of religion and culture. The idea of dangerous devil-worshipping cults has remained a stable element of conspiracy theories throughout history, as well as in the present. Accusations of involvement with demonic forces are recurring motifs in religious polemics and othering. This talk focuses on modern self-designated Satanism. The history of modern Satanism can be traced back to late eighteenth-century literary-political reinterpretations of Satan by Romantic authors such as Blake and Shelley. It then extends to Satanism in esoteric and anti-clerical contexts in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, before reaching the counterculture of the 1960s and contemporary political Satanist activism. Satanism as an openly declared identity became possible when Christianity’s influence on legal systems and social norms waned, making it a direct product of secularization. As a religious practice or coherent system of thought, modern Satanism didn’t emerge before approximately 1900, with pioneers like Stanislaw Przybyszewski and Ben Kadosh. However, Satanic thought can be traced in earlier instances, some of which continue to influence contemporary groups. This talk explores modern-day Satanist groups, including the Church of Satan (founded in 1966), the Temple of Set (founded in 1975), the Order of the Nine Angles (likely established in the 1970s), and The Satanic Temple (founded in 2012). Faxneld will demonstrate how these groups draw from a long tradition of Satanism as a form of cultural protest while adapting to evolving social conditions.

Chris Winkler will discuss the rise of a specific lineage of conservatism among intellectuals in postwar Japan. Sebastian Maslow sheds light on how North Korea became a way to create a discourse of state crisis that mandates the revision of Japan’s postwar security institutions. ABSTRACT:
Caleb Carter’s recent book, A Path into the Mountains: Shugendō and Mount Togakushi (University of Hawai’i Press, 2022), explores the history of Shugendō, a mountain religious tradition in Japan that formed over centuries out of a matrix of Buddhist, continental, and local religious beliefs and practices. Long an object of fascination and intrigue among scholars and the general public, its historical development has long been an enigma. A Path into the Mountains offers a provocative reexamination of the social, economic, and spiritual terrain from which Shugendō arose. It traces this path through the mountains of Togakushi in Nagano prefecture, while situating Shugendō within the broader religious landscape of medieval and early modern Japan. In the first part of this talk, Carter will recount a few stories from Togakushi’s cultural history included in the book that speak to Shugendō’s legacy at large as well as our broader understanding of Japan’s religious past. In the second part, Carter will share some preliminary findings from his next project, an investigation into various intersections between the modern rise of alpinism in Japan and the contemporaneous world of mountain worship. The latter has been largely studied from a folk studies perspective (minzokugaku), aligned with tradition, austerity, piety, and cultural essentialism. In contrast, mountaineering has been viewed as modern, secular, recreational, and international. These assumptions, as this next project aims to demonstrate, are ripe for reappraisal.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Caleb Carter is an assistant professor of Japanese religions in the Faculty of Humanities at Kyushu University. His main research centers on the history of Shugendō and more recently on contemporary trends in areas such as power spots (pawāsupotto) and regional restorations of Shugendō. His research interests include space and place, narrative and folklore, women and gender, and ecology. Carter received his MA and PhD from UCLA (Buddhist Studies) and was awarded a Japan Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins before joining the faculty at Kyūdai. He has published articles in History of Religions and in the Japanese Journal of Religious Studies and is author of A Path into the Mountains: Shugendō and Mount Togakushi (University of Hawai’i, 2022).

ABSTRACT:
Modern tantra is often viewed in terms of orientalist projection and cultural appropriation. While the commodification and commercialization of tantra is beyond doubt, a close look at its global reception since the nineteenth century reveals a complex tangle of exchanges in which learned South Asians played a crucial role. This talk will focus on Bengali participants in these exchanges, who identified tantra as “Indian occultism” and actively engaged, for instance, with the Theosophical Society. Rather than understanding this engagement as a “reaction” to a “Western export” of esotericism, Strube will explore local and diachronic (pre-colonial) developments in Bengal and relate them to global debates about religion, science, and nationalism. Complicating dichotomies between modernity and tradition, reform and orthodoxy, he will introduce a decentred approach to the historiography of esotericism that might be helpful for investigating similar developments in Asia.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Julian Strube is Assistant Professor in Religious Studies at the University of Vienna. He works from a global historical perspective on the relationship between religion and politics since the eighteenth century, focusing on exchanges between India, Europe, and North America. His third monograph, Global Tantra: Religion, Science, and Nationalism in Colonial Modernity, was published in 2022 by Oxford University Press. He has published widely on global religious history, religious comparativism, colonialism, esotericism, socialism, and far-right extremism.

ABSTRACT:
Yasukuni Fundamentalism examines the relationship between religion and resurgent nationalism in contemporary Japan. Although religious fundamentalism is often thought to be confined to monotheistic “religions of the book,” this study identifies the emergence of a fundamentalism rooted in the Shinto tradition and considers its role in shaping postwar Japanese nationalism and politics. Over the past half-century, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Association of Shintō Shrines, and, more recently Nippon Kaigi, have been engaged in collaborative efforts to “recover” or “restore” what was destroyed by the process of imperialist secularization during the Allied Occupation of Japan. This seminar will highlight some of the key findings of this study, including the increased support for the political agenda to revive patriotic education, promote Yasukuni Shrine, and revise the constitution, particularly since the disaster years of 1995 and 2011.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Mark R. Mullins is Professor of Japanese Studies and Director of the Japan Studies Centre at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Prior to this appointment in 2013, he was engaged in academic work in Japan for twenty-seven years and taught at Shikoku Gakuin University, Meiji Gakuin University, and Sophia University. He is the author and co-editor of a number of works, including Religious Minorities in Canada: A Sociological Study of the Japanese Experience (1989), Religion and Society in Modern Japan, co-edited with Shimazono Susumu and Paul Swanson (1993), Christianity Made in Japan (1998), Religion and Social Crisis in Japan, co-edited with Robert Kisala (2001), Disasters and Social Crisis in Contemporary Japan, co-edited with Kōichi Nakano (2016), and Yasukuni Fundamentalism: Japanese Religions and the Politics of Restoration (2021).

ABSTRACT:
In recent years, the idea that humankind entered a global age from around the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries has been accepted and employed by many scholars. Although at this early stage there were still large areas and a number of people that did not participate in this global net, the connections that began here reached a global scale for the first time in history. As consequence, the worldview of all peoples involved changed in order to respond to a range of new alterities and information revealed to them. For Latin Christendom – a central subject of this process – the religious perspective played a vital role in this change, as the very concept of ‘religion’ was being reframed. In this presentation I will discuss the formation of this global age in the early modern period, the different approaches scholarship took toward this historical phenomenon, and the role in this process of the development of a new concept of religion.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Renata Cabral Bernabé (PhD, University of São Paulo) is a Graduate School of International Cultural Studies Fellow at Tohoku University. Her research focuses on the early modern global encounters and the activity of the Jesuits in Japan. She is currently working on a book project on the impact of the missionary activity in Japan in the process of reframing ‘Religion’ in Europe.

ABSTRACT:
Chinese Buddhists have never remained stationary. They have always been on the move. Why did Buddhist monks migrate from China to Southeast Asia? How did they participate in transregional Buddhist networks across the South China Sea? In this talk, Chia will tell us the story of “South China Sea Buddhism,” referring to a Buddhism that emerged from a swirl of correspondence networks, forced exiles, voluntary visits, evangelizing missions, institution-building campaigns, and organizational efforts of countless Chinese and Chinese diasporic Buddhist monks. Drawing on multilingual research conducted in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Chia challenges the conventional categories of “Chinese Buddhism” and “Southeast Asian Buddhism” by focusing on the lesser-known—yet no less significant—Chinese Buddhist communities of maritime Southeast Asia. By crossing the artificial spatial frontier between China and Southeast Asia, this talk brings Southeast Asia into the study of Chinese Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism into the study of Southeast Asia.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Jack Meng-Tat Chia is Assistant Professor of History and Religious Studies at the National University of Singapore. His research focuses on Buddhism and Chinese popular religion in Southeast Asia, transnational Buddhism, and Sino-Southeast Asian interactions. His first book, Monks in Motion: Buddhism and Modernity Across the South China Sea (Oxford, 2020), won the 2021 EuroSEAS Humanities Book Prize. He has also published articles in journals such as Archipel, Asian Ethnology, China Quarterly, Contemporary Buddhism, History of Religions, and the Journal of Chinese Religions. He is currently working on two book projects: Beyond the Borobudur: Buddhism in Postcolonial Indonesia and Diplomatic Dharma: Buddhist Diplomacy in Modern Asia.

1980年生まれ。総合研究大学院大学文化科学研究科博士後期課程修了。博士（学術）。仏像を中心とする物質宗教論、宗教美術史を専門とする。現在、日本学術振興会特別研究員。学位論文「平和祈念信仰における観音像の研究」が第15回国際宗教研究所賞・奨励賞受賞。主要論文に「平和モニュメントと観音像――長崎市平和公園内の彫像における信仰と形象」（『宗教と社会』24号、2018年）、「現代のマリア観音と戦争死者慰霊」（中外日報社、第 15 回涙骨賞、2019年）、「1970年日本万国博覧会における仏教的造形物の役割」（佐野真由子編『万博学――万国博覧会という、世界を把握する方法』思文閣出版、2020年）他 。

ABOUT THE BOOK
Japan was the first Asian nation to face the full impact of modernity. Like the rest of Japanese society, Buddhist institutions, individuals, and thought were drawn into the dynamics of confronting the modern age. Japanese Buddhism had to face multiple challenges, but it also contributed to modern Japanese society in numerous ways. Buddhism and Modernity: Sources from Nineteenth-Century Japan makes accessible the voices of Japanese Buddhists during the early phase of high modernity.
The volume offers original translations of key texts—many available for the first time in English—by central actors in Japan’s transition to the modern era, including the works of Inoue Enryō, Gesshō, Hara Tanzan, Shimaji Mokurai, Kiyozawa Manshi, Murakami Senshō, Tanaka Chigaku, and Shaku Sōen. All of these writers are well recognized by Buddhist studies scholars and Japanese historians but have drawn little attention elsewhere; this stands in marked contrast to the reception of Japanese Buddhism since D. T. Suzuki, the towering figure of Japanese Zen in the first half of the twentieth century. The present book fills the chronological gap between the premodern era and the twentieth century by focusing on the crucial transition period of the nineteenth century.
Issues central to the interaction of Japanese Buddhism with modernity inform the five major parts of the work: sectarian reform, the nation, science and philosophy, social reform, and Japan and Asia. Throughout the chapters, the globally entangled dimension—both in relation to the West, especially the direct and indirect impact of Christianity, and to Buddhist Asia—is of great importance. The Introduction emphasizes not only how Japanese Buddhism was part of a broader, globally shared reaction of religions to the specific challenges of modernity, but also goes into great detail in laying out the specifics of the Japanese case.

ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Nadine Willems obtained a PhD in History from the University of Oxford in 2015 and currently teaches Modern Japanese History at the University of East Anglia. She specializes in the intellectual and cultural history of modern Japan, with a focus on the politics and literature of dissent during the first decades of the twentieth century. Her first monograph, about the anarchist Ishikawa Sanshirō, is based on her PhD thesis and was published by Leiden University Press in 2020. She has also translated 1930s poetry by Hokkaidō political dissenter and ethnographer Sarashina Genzō.

基調講演者紹介
佐藤勢紀子（さとう・せきこ）。東北大学高度教養教育・学生支援機構教授。博士（文学）。1955年仙台市生まれ。1985年東北大学大学院文学研究科国文学国語学日本思想史学専攻博士課程満期退学。1988年東北大学文学部講師。教養部、留学生センター等での勤務を経て、2014年より現職。2001年より国際文化研究科でも教育・研究指導に従事。専門は日本思想史、日本文学、日本語教育。単著に『宿世の思想――源氏物語の女性たち』（ぺりかん社、1995年）、『源氏物語の思想史的研究――妄語と方便』（新典社、2017年）他。

要旨
What are Japanese emperors for? Wherein lies the quality of 21st century Japanese emperorship? John Breen proposes that answers to these most basic of questions are to be found, partly at least, in the very rites of accession that concluded in December 2019. Kings and emperors use accession rites as a stage on which to construct, display and render meaningful an array of new and privileged relationships of power. The quality of kingship/emperorship is to be found precisely in the aggregate of these several power relations. Emperor Naruhito’s recent accession rites saw him fashion anew such relations with the Japanese state and the Japanese people, of course, but significantly also with his ancestor, the Sun Goddess. In this talk, Breen will examine first the emperor-centered dynamic at the heart of the Reiwa rites of accession. He will then trace the roots of these rites back 150 years to the Meiji Restoration, and the construction then of an entirely new type of emperor. For all the change in the quality of emperorship, it is clear that the Meiji legacy endures to this day. Finally, he will return to the 2016 abdication crisis, and reflect on its implications for the imperial institution now and in the future.

西欧起源の技法の非西欧世界での受容にともなう変質、西欧側の主張する普遍性が国際関係のなかで被る脱構築、さらに宗教上の基本概念が翻訳を通してどこまで等価性や共約可能性を維持でき、それにはいかなる政治的条件が求められるのか、それぞれ、透視図法、森鷗外の国際赤十字会議における発言、さらにキリスト教のケノーシスと禅の「無」や仏教の「空」との交渉を具体例として検討する。

発表１：「岡倉覚三における日本・中国・インド――「アジア」文明論の観点から」
発表者：岡本 佳子（国際基督教大学アジア文化研究所・研究員）
明治期の思想家岡倉覚三（天心、1863-1913）については、近年、多様な観点から学際的研究が進んでいる。本発表では、岡倉が美と宗教の宝庫として描いた「アジア」という文明像に焦点を絞り、従来のような反西洋帝国主義のアジア主義言説、もしくは日本中心主義のアジア像といった枠組みでは理解しきれない複雑さがそこに内包されていることを、当時の時代的文脈の中で読み解く。
発表２：「文化伝統と近代化――吉野作造・梁啓超の文化観を中心に」
発表者：趙 暁靚（広東外語外貿大学日本語学院・教授）
明治文化研究にみられる吉野作造（1878-1933）の文化観を、第一次世界大戦後における梁啓超（1873-1929）の東西文化認識と対比して、文化伝統と近代化との関連性についての日中知識人の捉え方を検討してみる。
発表３：「洋画家児島虎次郎の見た中国と朝鮮――日記・現地通信を手がかりに」
発表者：朱 琳（東北大学大学院国際文化研究科・准教授）
大原美術館（岡山県倉敷市）は1930年に設立した日本最初の西洋美術中心の私立美術館である。その作品蒐集の大役を見事に務めた洋画家児島虎次郎（1881-1929）は生涯４回中国（そのうちの１回は朝鮮にも）を旅行した。当時『中国民報』掲載の児島の現地通信および最近翻刻した一部の児島日記を手がかりにし、東洋対西洋の構図の中での児島の中国・朝鮮認識を明らかにする。

ブラジルで20世紀初頭にアジア系移民の宗教として始まった仏教が、ブラジル人信者の増加に伴い、ブラジル仏教の萌芽ともいうべき段階を迎えている。本作品はブラ ジルの仏教の“今”を「仏法僧」の三法に則る三章の映像作品として記録映画化したものである。

【菅尾健太郎監督紹介】僧侶、画家、記録映画作家。浄土真宗本願寺派開教使。2006年にブラジルでNGOロータス・ブランコを設立し、12年まで数々の教育文化プロジェクトを実現。08年、短編ドキュメンタリー［仏教伝道 Transmissão do Budismo］ を製作。08年より11年までブラジル、日本、フランス共同製作長編ドキュメンタリー映画［時折・TOKIORI］の調査担当、シナリオ製作に関わる。13年、アメリカの浄土真宗の軌跡を描くドキュメンタリー［STREAMS OF LIGHT: Shin Buddhism in America］を監督。（詳細は、映画ウエブサイトを参照）

模範としての外国と清末の政治改革
―― 憲法運動を中心として――

康有為（1858-1927）は1898年に彼自身が書いた日本の政治改革に関する研究において、「近代国家への政治改革は、欧米においては300年の時間を必要とした、日本においては、それを模倣して30年を費やした」と言い、「中国では、3年以内に基礎的な政治改革を推進できる」と明言した。数年後の1905年に清朝政府はようやく「立憲制への準備を進めていく」と宣言した。このことを契機として、官僚及び知識人たちの間には、清朝政府が立憲制を取るにあたってどれほどの時間を必要とするべきかを巡り大論争が起きた。しかし、十分な憲法を頒布するという目標が実現されることはなく、清朝はその憲法がきっかけとなり滅びた。それゆえに、従来の研究では、20世紀初頭の中国における立憲運動は、ただの輸入品で、明治期の日本のような移植は中国においては失敗してしまった試みに過ぎないと考えられている。しかしながら、これは物語の一部に過ぎない。中国の立憲主義者は、ヨーロッパと日本の歴史的経験について議論をしていたのみならず、それによって近代的な世界において共通した基礎的な政治構想と法律概念も取り入れて独自な理解を形成していた。実際のところ、20世紀初頭、中国、ロシア、オスマン帝国、及びペルシア帝国などの国において立憲運動が起きていることからも、「憲法」は世界的かつ不可避的な概念となった。
