On June 18, six representatives from University College London, including Vice Provost Geraint Rees, visited Tohoku University and met with President Teiji Tominaga and other university leadership.
During the luncheon meeting, President Tominaga delivered opening remarks and congratulated UCL on celebrating its 200th anniversary in February of this year. He also expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received during his visit to UCL last December and highlighted his high expectations for deepening all aspects of their institutions’ partnership in education, research, and industry-university collaboration based on the agreement signed with UCL President and Provost Michael Spence to bring the universities’ relationship into its ‘Second Phase’.
Prior to the luncheon, a Memorandum of Agreement signing ceremony was held for a Double Degree Programme in Disaster Science, which the two universities have been working towards for some time. Aimed at Tohoku University Civil and Environmental Engineering students and UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR) students, the programme will constitute a significant milestone in the utilization of knowledge gained from the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami to foster global talent in the field of disaster science.
Executive Vice President (Strategic Planning) and Provost Prof Takafumi Aoki, Executive Vice President (Research) Prof Asako Sugimoto, Executive Vice President (Public Relations and Medical Co-Creation) Prof Hideo Harigae, Executive Vice President (International Strategy and Global Education Initiatives) Prof Masahiro Yamaguchi, Dean of the School of Engineering Prof Hitoshi Takamura, and International Research Institute of Disaster Science Deputy Director Prof Takako Izumi attended the signing ceremony.
In addition, Researchers Meetings on the three themes of ‘Neuroscience’, ‘Quantum’, and ‘Innovation’ were held in parallel on the morning of the same day. Executives from both universities and researchers working at the forefront of their fields participated, engaging in productive discussions.
It is expected that this visit will serve as a catalyst for Tohoku University and UCL to further develop exchange across a wide range of fields including education, research, and industry-university collaboration.
