Hayakawa and Abe from the Iizuka Laboratory participated in the 57th Autumn Meeting of the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ), held from Monday, September 14, to Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus of Hiroshima University.
On September 15, they delivered oral presentations within the Environmental Division on the following topics:
“Fundamental Study on Carbonate Mineralization Technology for Concrete-based Waste Using Seawater” – Hiroki Hayakawa*, Xingrong He*, Atsushi Iizuka* (Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University)
“Effect of Cement Hydration Progress on Calcium Extraction Behavior and Changes in Cement Hydrate Phases During the Extraction Process” – Kuuya Abe, Hiroki Hayakawa*, Xingrong He*, Atsushi Iizuka*, Seiichi Hoshino** (*Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University; **Taiheiyo Cement Corporation)
The three-day event was highly productive, featuring lively discussions, numerous presentations on related research, and exposure to a wide variety of topics outside our usual scope of study.
Comments from the presenters are as follows:
Hayakawa:
As this was my final conference participation during my master’s program, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to deliver an oral presentation at such a large-scale event.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Iizuka, Dr. He, and Shibrele-san for their guidance and advice throughout the preparation process.
Although this was my first time attending an SCEJ meeting, I found it incredibly educational to listen to research presentations across a broad range of fields—not limited solely to CO₂-related topics.
Furthermore, I was encouraged by the large number of attendees who visited our presentation, which gave me a clear sense of the high level of interest in our research.
Participating in this conference provided me with a wealth of inspiration and new knowledge. Once again, thank you very much for this invaluable opportunity.
Abe:
I was given the opportunity to deliver an oral presentation—the first of its kind in my life. I am delighted and humbled by the many questions I received, which reflect a high level of interest in my research.
During the conference, I had the opportunity to attend a wide range of presentations—from fundamental research to real-world implementation and business applications.
It was a highly rewarding experience that broadened my perspective and further motivated my own research.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Iizuka and Dr. He for their extensive guidance, to Sibulele for her help in refining my English slides, and to everyone else who contributed to this work.
I intend to build upon what I have learned and continue to dedicate myself to my research.

It sounds like they had a great time in Hiroshima and really enjoyed the food—I’m quite envious!
Incidentally, Abe-kun—who clearly excels at being a supportive junior—proudly reported that he never once had to take out his wallet during their meals!
It’s wonderful to hear that the academic conference was such a fruitful experience for them. I have high hopes for their continued success!
