Tohoku University Inter-University Exchange Project

Development of Highly Talented Professionals
through Japan-India University Collaboration
for Innovation Creation and Sustainable Development

Program Outline

Program Outline (4 Stages)

In cooperation with top Indian universities, the program will implement the following four stages:

① MEET
② CONNECT
③ EXPLORE
④ PIONEER

These stages will gradually and systematically expand the exchange program.

Each stage places emphasis on learning that allows students from both India and Japan to collaborate, learn together, draw inspiration from each other, and recognize each others' strengths and excellence. Through intimate Intercultural Collaborative Learning (ICL) activities, we aim to build sustainable networks for the future and establish international bonds of trust that transcend individual careers.

  • 1MEET

    Fostering Interest

    Eligibility: 1st/2nd year undergraduate students

This stage will promote interest in India, acting as a first step toward international exchange. Students will experience India's diversity and potential through MEET India Day, seminars, and workshops. Microdegrees will be awarded to exceptional participants.

  • 2CONNECT

    Deepening Connections

    Eligibility: undergraduate students

We will conduct online seminars and solution-oriented ICL (Intercultural Collaborative Learning) activities on themes such as technology, SDGs, multicultural understanding, and entrepreneurship. Through short-term "Japan-India Blended Mobility" study abroad, which will entail actual travel, we will also foster mutual understanding and trust between Japanese and Indian students.

  • 3EXPLORE

    Learning about Joint Development

    Eligibility: senior undergraduate/master's degree students

We will implement exchange studies, research abroad, and corporate internships, starting with the "Japan/India Global Joint Development Challenge Program," during which students from Tohoku University and India will cooperate to solve social/technical issues. Through these activities, students will develop their problem identification and solving capacity, intercultural collaboration skills, and social implementation abilities.

  • 4PIONEER

Leading the Way to the Future

    Eligibility: doctoral students

In this stage we will implement a doctoral Double Degree Program with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay It will initially be offered in the fields of disaster science, transportation, robotic engineering, and healthcare, then expanded to cutting edge areas like AI and Quantum Science & Technology, and fields that promote sustainable economic growth such as energy.

Objectives for Student Growth

We strive to foster talented individuals who possess a high degree of specialization and practical abilities and are capable of excelling in the international community, while also having an understanding of and respect for the cultures and languages of Japan and India. We especially emphasize entrepreneurial skills, innovativeness, the ability to collaborate and display leadership in multinational teams, and developing problem-solving skills and toughness via on-site internships and projects. By fostering borderless talent that can excel in both Japan and India, we hope to contribute to sustainable growth and mutual understanding in both nations.
