One in four Japanese males and one in six Japanese females will die from cancer. Metastasis, a characteristic of many tumor types, is estimated to be responsible for the death of 90% of all patients with cancer. However, effective treatment of metastasis has not been established. In our laboratory, we have focused at early diagnosis and treatment of lymph node metastasis, often observed in breast cancer, head and neck cancer. We have reported research activities to the world and carried out clinical trials.

We carry out experiments on animals. Animal studies that live in the same life principal as human, are essential to step up to clinical trials from basic research. Scientists in the field of Biomedical Engineering cannot contribute to progress in medicine without animal studies. All in vivo studies in our laboratory are carried out in strict accordance with the recommendations in the Guide for the Proper Conduct of Animal Experiments and Related Activities in Academic Research and Technology. The protocol was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Tohoku University.

Nano/microbubbles are defined as bubbles with a size of nano/micrometers. In our laboratory, we are developing new types of nano/microbubbles, i.e. acoustic liposomes, for improving tumor selectivity of drug.
