Scope of the symposium
Decision-making involving science and technology demands coherent arguments both with social contexts and indeterminacy (incertitude) in science. It further requires classification of indeterminacy in science under social contexts which will turn to be a basis of institutional design. So-called "scientific trials" are not only important by themselves but also attractive from the point of view of science communication, since they allow observers to see influence of institutional restrictions (procedure of arguments) on rationality of decisions. This symposium will call discussion of the issues to point out their sources and possible solutions through (1) consideration of ways of dealing with scientific knowledge in court in Japan, indeterminacy in particular; (2) comparison of the current situation with Stirling's classification and initiatives in oversea courts (McClellan). It also aims to give new insights on relevant uses of scientific knowledge in social decision making in general.
