News｜Alliance of Research Institutes and Centers, Tohoku UniversityOn July 23, 2015 (Thursday), 'Research institute young researchers' ensemble workshop-The first movement: Let's start from the friend' was held in the Katahira Sakura hall of Tohoku University. It was attended by 122 people including 2 guest speakers. Objective of the workshop was to initiate cross-cutting, interdisciplinary collaborative research and it involved short presentations, poster presentations, research laboratory tour and exchange meeting.
There were 85 presentations including 2 guest speakers and 1 specially planned presentation. There were short sessions of 1 minute each for respective presentations and poster presentations for 80 minutes, divided into 2 sessions. Ballots were obtained from the participants and 8 excellent posters and 2 encouragement awards were selected as listed below.

After the completion of poster presentation, a tour for visiting research facilities in various research laboratories was arranged. The laboratory tour was divided into two courses, namely A and B. Course A included tour of the Katahira campus (Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Research institution of electrical communication, Institute of Fluid Science) and Seiryo campus (Institute of development, ageing and cancer). Course B involved study tour of the Katahira campus (Advanced Institute for Materials Research- AIMR, Institute for Materials research) and Aobayama Campus (Center for Northeast Asian Studies, The International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences). The number of participants in course A was 26 and that in course B was 20.
After the laboratory tour, there was an assembly in the Katahira Sakura hall, in which 58 members participated. In the interaction meeting, Prof. Sato Masaaki, Head, Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences, greeted the members and the award winners were felicitated.
Many members participated and there was lively discussion during the poster presentation and laboratory tour. Researchers from each of the laboratories cooperated and the interaction progressed. This workshop is expected to strengthen the ties between research institutes and lead to interdisciplinary and cross-cutting research.
