OBJECTIVE

The world now faces complex and diverse problems, such as environmental issues —especially climate change— and new compound disasters that combine increasingly intense and frequent natural disasters with pandemics etc. Given this, realizing resilient future societies where people can lead fulfilling lives is a pressing issue for humanity.
As a university located in the area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, Tohoku University has made every effort toward recovery in the damaged areas and revitalization of Japan as a whole. In 2021, as the culmination of its 10 years of effort since the Great East Japan Earthquake, Tohoku University moved forward with its university-wide "Green Goals Initiative" comprising ① restoration & resilience, ② green technology, and ③ social innovation & inclusion.
Based on this project's mid/long-term vision, the university will implement an international exchange/education program to cultivate multitiered global resilience together with partner universities in the UK and US with which it has strategic relationships (University College London, University of York, University of East Anglia, University of Washington), and create a joint graduate program. The project will foster global leaders who can create resilient societies and develop them internationally, and also expand their successes to the Indo-Pacific region.
