| While it is best to preserve archaeological sites in their present state, ePreservation in Recordsf is conducted only in unavoidable circumstances. ePreservation in Recordsf refers to conducting excavations and creating documentation before destroying archaeological sites. This is based on the Act on Protection of Cultural Properties, which was revised in 1975.
At our university, the Buried Cultural Property Investigation Committee was established in 1983, and the research on buried cultural properties within the Tohoku University campuses has been conducted by the Committee and the Archaeological Research Office. However, the volume of work increased rapidly after 1993, overwhelming the capacity of the previous system. As a result, the Archaeological Research Center was established in 1994. In 2006, it was reorganized as a specific project organization, and in 2017, it became the Archaeological Research Office. Details up to the establishment of the Center can be found in 'The Centennial History of Tohoku University, Volume 7.'
The current staff consists of one Research Office director (dual appointment), three cultural property researchers (one specially appointed associate professor, one specially appointed assistant professor, and one specialist staff), one assistant administrative staff, and other workers responsible for handling archaeological objects. To manage the operations of the Research Office, an Operations Committee deliberates on important matters related to the organization, personnel, budget, and other operational aspects of the office. The Committee chairperson is the Research Office director, and the Operations Committee members are composed of the following: One member from each district Campus Development Committee of the Tohoku University Facility Development and Operations Committee 2 or 3 professors or associate professors specializing in fields related to excavation surveys Professors or associate professors from departments related to the excavation site, nominated by the chairperson on each occasion The head of the Facilities Department Additionally, under the Operations Committee, a Research Committee has been established to investigate and deliberate on specialized matters related to the excavation of buried cultural properties.
