Overview of Research

Chemical reaction starts with processes in which two or more atoms or molecules interact after approaching each other. Various physical and chemical processes, such as energy and momentum transfer, electron transfer, or nucleation (cluster formation), also occur, in addition to “ordinary” chemical reactions. By applying atomic and molecular collision experiments combined with mass spectrometry and spectroscopic methods, we can unveil details of interparticle interactions, reaction mechanisms, and the key factor of the reaction driving force. In our laboratory, we are aiming at elucidating chemical reaction mechanisms in condensed phase and discovering new stable chemical species like fullerenes, which are characteristic to the intermediate phase, from the study of clusters. Our main target among the clusters are: Complex systems consisting of metal atoms and molecules (e.g. Mg+ICH3, Cun+N2), valence bond systems (e.g. Cn+, Sin+), ion crystals (e.g. NanFn-1+), and so on. Some other research projects are running such as “spectroscopy and reaction studies of cluster ions formed by sputtering or discharge methods” and “mass production and characterization of atom endohedral fullerenes.” We are now challenging the above problems and also other new research themes.
