Our laboratory belongs to the Department of Quantum Science and Energy Engineering<\/a> (This would sound strange, and I think “Department of Nuclear Engineering” expresses our department better), Graduate School of Engineering<\/a>, Tohoku University<\/a>. We welcome international students interested in our research; this page offers information on our application procedure for graduate students. Please note, however, that whether our policies fit you should be much more important than whether our studies interest you. We would like to ask you to confirm our policies<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application procedure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Regular courses (degree students)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Prospective students must pass an enrollment examination scheduled on campus twice in a year (August and March) to take regular courses for a master’s or doctoral degree. To prepare for the exam, applicants living abroad usually join us as research students (non-degree students) a few months before taking the exam; however, this is not required. Please note that research students are required to pay enrollment and tuition fees unless they officially belong to our partner universities<\/a><\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. More information about the enrollment examination can be found on the School of Engineering webpage<\/a>, and our department webpage<\/a> offers problems in past written tests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Non-degree courses (exchange students)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Several programs<\/a> are offered for short-term study (a few months to one year). Students belonging to most of our partner universities<\/a> do not need to pay tuition fees to Tohoku University while studying in our laboratory. To get the most out of your time with us, we suggest contacting your advisor at your home university to discuss your study in our laboratory. Please contact us for more information if you are interested in applying for a scholarship<\/a> through the university. We would like to suggest prospective students to confirm this<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sendai City<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sendai is the largest city in the north-east part of Japan and one of the best places in the world to do your graduate work. As an urban city, it is not as crowded as other major Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. You will find more information about Sendai here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cost of living<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sendai’s cost of living is relatively lower than that of large cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. The International Support Office in Tohoku University estimates the cost of living at approximately 60,000 JPY excluding the cost of accommodations (more details can be found here<\/a>). The Japan Student Services Organization offers a list of scholarships for study in Japan.<\/a> The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship<\/a> to be consider the best and most competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
