Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation by Potential Drop and Ultrasonics

We fear that there are surface, embedded and back-wall cracks in a pipe and pressure vessel used in the electric power and chemical plants. It is necessary to evaluate such crack nondestructively and also quantitatively in order to predict the lifetime. A new measurement method of crack dimension and shape has been developed based on the analysis of an inverse problem where the data associated with the potential drop measured as shown in Fig.1 are compared with those of theoretical analysis in a computer. Original method of nondestructive evaluation of a closed crack by ultrasonics has also been developed.
