ABSTRACT:
<\/strong>In 1902, the renowned Buddhist scholar and philosopher Inoue Enry\u014d (1858-1919) embarked on his second world trip, which included an in-depth exploration of India. Often called \u201cDoctor Monster\u201d for his work on y\u014dkai, he also sought to revitalize Buddhist scholarship through direct engagement with historic sites and living traditions. In this lecture, Lisa Zhang delves into Inoue\u2019s experiences traveling across key Buddhist pilgrimage locations, highlighting how these encounters shaped his views on cross-cultural exchange and helped refine his approach to modernizing Buddhist thought. She will explore excerpts from Inoue\u2019s travelogue Seik<\/em>\u014d nichiroku<\/em>, to uncover the philosophical and religious insights he gleaned while visiting Bodh Gaya and other sacred regions. By investigating how Inoue merged Eastern spirituality with Western academic approaches, Zhang promises to offer a fresh perspective on early twentieth-century global intellectual networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ABOUT THE LECTURER:<\/strong>
Lisa Zhang is a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Japanese Religion and Intellectual History at the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University. Her current research focuses on Chinese-Japanese Buddhist exchanges in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She has broad interests in intellectual history, transcultural studies, and China\u2013India relations. After receiving her training at University College London, Fudan University, and the University of Copenhagen, she defended her PhD dissertation, \u201cRe-thinking Indian Philosophy in Early Twentieth-Century China,\u201d at the University of Heidelberg in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is organized by the Tohoku University Graduate School of International Cultural Studies (Dept. of Japanese Religion and Intellectual History).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
