Abstract: Most people living in contemporary Japan have encountered terms such as “okarutoteki” or “okarutoppoi” to describe certain cultural and religious phenomena. The term okaruto\u2014a phonetic adaptation of the English word \u201coccult\u201d\u2014now appears in the titles of numerous manga, novels, anime, and films, and is therefore deeply ingrained in contemporary Japanese culture. But what, in fact, does this term refer to? For some, it may evoke premodern or prescientific practices such as astrology and necromancy; for others, it is immediately associated with distinctly modern phenomena such as UFOs. In this course, we will examine modern history through the lens of \u201cthe Occult,\u201d paying special attention to the formation of categories such as \u201creligion\u201d and \u201cscience\u201d in the nineteenth century and beyond.<\/p>\n

Abstract: This course explores a provocative intersection in contemporary life: the relationship between religious organisations,fi nancial misconduct, and the law. As one scholar* puts it, studying money is not so diff erent from studying religion,because both ask what we value, and why. But what happens when believers become victims of fraud? Drawing onfamous cases from post-1970s Japan, this course traces how religion and consumer law have shaped each other in waysthat still resonate today. No prior knowledge of Japan, religious studies or law is required \u2014 just curiosity about howfaith, money, and power collide.<\/p>\n
