Klautau’s research focuses on the intellectual history of modern Japan, with Buddhism at its center, and he has published extensively on modern Japanese Buddhism in particular. In recent years, he has also been studying the relationship between pseudo-history, the occult, and historical writing. Godart examines questions of scientific thought and pan-Asianism in modern Japan, with a particular focus on Nichirenism, and has recently also turned to research in military history. Gaitanidis has studied “spirituality” and other concepts that have been regarded as alternatives to “religion,” focusing mainly on the relationships between religion and therapy, religion and consumption, and religion and law in contemporary Japanese society.

We are an English-friendly seminar, with students from many different nationalities.
