ViEWi: The Vision and Research of the Mei Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 4, 2026, our very own Associate Professor Mei-Fang Chien was featured in an online article by ViEWi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ViEWi is a web magazine that highlights the people of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Tohoku University. It shares researchers\u2019 perspectives, ways of thinking, and research endeavors, along with the current activities and future aspirations of both students and alumni. The platform showcases a diverse range of voices\u2014from professors to graduate students\u2014all centered on a common theme: each individual\u2019s perspective in shaping the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this feature, our laboratory head, Mei-sensei, presents her vision of developing sustainable solutions with low environmental impact in harmony with ecosystems. She introduces the MEI-Laboratory as an \u201catelier of environmental biotechnology,\u201d where research focuses on understanding the environmental remediation functions of plants and microorganisms and translating them into practical technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The laboratory\u2019s work spans a wide range of topics, including mechanisms of toxic element uptake in plants, phytoremediation with consideration of soil\u2013microbial interactions, and the use of microorganisms to recover valuable metals from wastewater. Recent research also explores marine microplastics and their role in pollutant transport, enhancement of microbial CO\u2082 fixation, and the degradation of biodegradable materials in natural environments. These studies integrate approaches from the molecular level to real-world environmental systems while actively engaging students in interdisciplinary, environment- and bio-related research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Mei-sensei shares insights into her academic journey, the societal significance of her research, and what the MEI-Laboratory seeks in prospective students. She also highlights the laboratory\u2019s international environment, where students from diverse backgrounds contribute unique perspectives on global environmental challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
